In terms of their digital background, how similar was that student compared to a Singapore student?
Being a student (partly true) and a gamer (not regular though) myself, I do spent an average amount of time strategizing and creating loop holes to be good at a particular game, what more students of this era when gaming platforms are constant improving. I do recollect having students who are as intense Sam when it comes to gaming or plainly just facing the computer, creating online activities out of boredom and it is surprising on how they can switch it into an excitement at a blink of an eye.
How might teachers in Singapore today engage and teach our digital natives?
After coming across GBL, I personally feel that it is a good platform in engaging young minds to encourage learning. Besides the fun factor, it is quite amazing on how much knowledge could be absorbed via it. As teachers, I believe that one have to be flexible and creative in creating an atmosphere that will intrigue the student so that they’ll be an inquisitive, responsive and independent individual. A good start will be for us to explore the current happenings and keep up with times in creating an involvement in the various platforms that attracts students so that we are able to comprehend their understanding and relating their interest fitting our approach strategically.
As you look into the possible future of the educational landscape, what sort of impressions, fears, or possibilities crossed your mind?
Self-opinionated, the future will definitely be moulded into a completely hi-tech environment considering that currently electronic devices are constantly undergoing advancement to provide convenience. Undoubtedly education will keep on improving to a better standard promoting the vast application of self-directed learning since the youth are the active users in technological platform. However I also believe that inevitably, one of the many fear will be the possibility that someday labour and manpower would not be of necessary if technology gets really advanced as currently it already at the direction towards a paperless generation.
What might living, learning and working be like in the future?
Technology may be the sole responsible ground that controls everything for all landscapes. Consequently, living maintenance will be costly and it is no surprise if humans may end up jobless in certain aspects as machines and devices will take charge. Learning nevertheless will be constantly evolving to the stage where the exposure of learning processes can be discovered at a click of the search button and students becoming more independent than ever.
How is NIE preparing you to prepare your students for this possible future? How might you prepare yourself?
With the various modules I’m undertaking, NIE has covered almost all the learning aspects of engaging minds and encouraging meaningful learning. It has definitely helped me in understanding the diversity of learners present and the exploration of the vast technological platform to keep up with the times. With the start off, it will help me guide my students to be a self-directed learner by introducing the learning processes of ICT and its benefits to a brighter future.
