Session 1: My Reflections...by Irma T.

 16th Sep 2010

I remembered the very first computer i had ever used was in Zhenghua Primary School- i believe it was when i was in P3/P4. Unlike many of the slim, light weight, luxurious smart 'touch' gadgets students are able to enjoy now, we had what the younger generations now would call 'Dinosaur-age' look alike machines. In those times, the screen was very 'Matrix' looking and fonts are all in green. The system units were all built in a bulky horizontal box and there was no such thing as optical mouse. Nonetheless, i remembered everyone in my class was so excited to be able to touch and use a computer for the first time. I remembered that moment when i was assigned to the computer and had to sit and wait for the teacher's instructions to switch on the PC. Everyone was so eager and i felt anticipation filled up the lab. Aside feeling good that i was able to use the computer for the first time, it felt like i was given the trust by my teacher to use such a modern machine and be responsible for it.

i guess that had to be the earlier period prior to implementing ICT in the curriculum.

     ICT is so exciting!:-)

Especially for people like me because it is another way to be creative in passing on knowledge, in Art for example, to our students. When i mentioned, 'people like me', i meant Tech gadget lovers. Although i may admit that there are still a lot of things to be learn in the ever advancing technologies, I love finding out and learning more about the new different technologies associating in my area of teaching and interests...for example, DSLR cameras, online webs albums, different kind of softwares... be it in Windows or Mac OS.

Learning Art through ICT bring about an infinite learning experiences now, to students and teachers alike. Especially with the better designed & improved softwares and the opportunity to be able to learn through different platforms in many creative ways.i believe that with new creative ideas and fun ways, we are able to engage the curious young minds to learn important skills and yet enjoy themselves while learning a particular subject. By implementing savvy Mac applications like Keynote for presentations and making movies using iMovies & Garageband for examples, students are likely to gain interest while still opening their horizons to the different aspects of Art.

As an educator, i feel that it is only right that we model the importance of learning by keeping up with the advancement of technologies and passing on the knowledge in ways relevant to the students.

  1. Interesting "W". As you learn to edublog by doing it, try to step outside yourself and observe what you are doing.

Using console games to learn art is something I have never thought of. Please explore this option and share with the rest should the opportunity arise. For now, I can say that I see possibilities with De Blob, a Wii game that my son and I have played.
