In this e-learning, answer the following questions:
- What are some characteristics of digital natives? (What are they good at? What are they poor at?)
Digital Natives are highly creative people who are good with technologies. They can get the technology very fast and they can teach others how to use the technology as well. They have short attention spans. Digital Natives have short attention spans, they only choose to pay attention to what they want to learn and they make sure that what they learn makes sense. They do not believe in traditional teaching as it is too "boring" for them. They believe in interaction between the lesson and the learner. They are multi - taskers who are able to understand and process information from different sources. They are able to learn on their own and they tend to surf the web when they want to obtain information. They are however less structured and they tend to learn when they want to and not when they need too. They are impatient as they tend to get what they want over a few seconds over the internet, they expect it as well in the real life.
- Which portrait did you select? (In your blog, create a link to the portrait.) In terms of their digital background, how similar was that student compared to a Singapore student?
I chose Sam.

Many of my students play war of warcraft and many other games. They spend many hours playing these games perfecting their strategies. Sam spent alot of time on these games as much as 12 hours a day.
Singapore students are similar to Sam as they spend the same amount of time on the computer, They tend to be very creative on the computer and they can come up with different strategies to outplay each other online.
They can text and communicate by msn with each other practically everyday and this technology will come in handy when they will have to collaborate in their group works.
- How might teachers in Singapore today engage and teach our digital natives?
First of all, we must have the technology to back us up. Schools must be equipped with the technologies that the students may want to learn in school. We could have a video game labs that will help the students learn. Each class may get like a ipod pad where a group of them can learn from or better yet get the teachers ipads so that they get the information at hand and with a click.
Teachers must be able to embrace the technology and we must change our teaching strategies to suit the students. Game Based Learning is a good start. Introduce certain games or platform to facilitate learning. The Technology must be in relation with the subject you are teaching, that way the students may learn in the way they are used to.
Part 2
- As you look into the possible future of the educational landscape, what sort of impressions, fears, or possibilities crossed your mind?
In the future, technology will play a bigger part of our lives. Students may only go to schools with just an ipad to school. There will be no need for papers or exams and tests. Students will create their own learning experiences and will learn how to problem solve on their own. Books will be a thing of the past (as sad as that sounds) e-books will be the in thing. Students will learn from textbooks that are already store in their ipads.
Teachers will not teach, rather they will facilitate learning. Students may go to teachers for answers when they cant find the answers. They will give the problem and the students will try to problem solve on their own.
- What might living, learning and working be like in the future?
I believe that we will live, learn and work with technology and using technology to aide us in our living will make life easier such as smart homes where with a click of a button the lights and the aircon will switch themselves on when you walk through the door. Students may not have textbooks rather ebooks to learn and they may not take exams in pen and paper rather in the way of quizes on the net and the teachers will have the results on the spot.As we come to an paperless era, this technology will be needed to help in the running of everyday life.
- How is NIE preparing you to prepare your students for this possible future? How might you prepare yourself?
i find that the modules im taking so far are interrelated. ICT and the educational Psychology one and two, teaches us about our learners, how to manage diverse learners and the technologies that we can use in the classroom.
- i will continue to learn and upgrade myself so that i will not be left behind. i would like to be able to facilitate lessons so the students will learn life skills that will enable them to to better themselves as they grow.
Relook your answer to the question on living, learning and working in the future. Other than the possible paperless aspect, how else do the videos try to illustrate the nature of our lives?
ReplyDeleteTeachers typically complain that they "have no time". If this is the case, how do you plan to learn over your lifetime?
